The first step in any successful home improvement project is finding the right contractor for the job, but many homeowners don’t know where to begin and what the process should entail. With that in mind, let’s discuss how to find local contractors based on our more than 30 years of experience here at Emmons.
Knowing Where to Look
Start by creating a short list. Your list should include at least three contractors, but you can include as many as interest you within reason. Neighbors along with family, friends, and coworkers who live in your area are a great resource. Consider an app like Nextdoor. Another excellent source is HomeAdvisor, and if the job is relatively small, try Angi, which was formerly called Angie’s List. If you still need some additional options, your local home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot may be able to help. Be mindful that you don’t need to vet contractors yet, but you do want to take care to ensure that the contractors you add to the list are skilled and experienced in the kind of work you want and are local to and established in the area where your home is located.
Schedule an Estimate
Now that you know how to find local contractors, the next step is determining which to hire. That begins with an estimate, which most contractors provide free and without obligation. An estimate is an opportunity to get a feel for the company as feeling comfortable and confident in your decision is important. An estimate also provides you with context, which is why we recommend at least three. Avoid paying too much, but watch out for low bids as well since they’ll often cost you more in the end.
Vet the Contractor
At this point, you likely have a contractor you want to hire, and the final step before doing that is to vet them. That begins with ensuring that their licensing and insurance are in order. You should also ask for references and follow through on those. References should be relevant to your particular home improvement project. That will give you much greater insight into what you can expect.
